Commemorative Plaque to Peter Lipar

Liparjeva cesta 5
1234 Mengeš

In 2004, on the centennial of the birth of Peter Lipar, a memorial plaque was erected by the Mengeš Wind Band in celebration of its 120th anniversary. Stane Ocepek computer-processed a photograph of the composer and outlined a model for the relief portrait. The portrait and plaque were made by Anton Benda.

Peter Lipar

Peter Lipar (1884–1953) was the mayor of his native town, Mengeš, and served as capellmeister of the Mengeš Wind Band and an organist.

He was born in Mali Mengeš and showed enthusiasm for music from young age. He followed in the footsteps of his father Matija, an organist, and obtained a professional music education at the Organ School in Ljubljana. Playing with the Mengeš Wind Band since he was twelve, Lipar was appointed the orchestra’s capellmeister at the early age of seventeen. Lipar conducted the band until his death, on 11 August 1953, that is, for full 52 years.

It was his son, Peter Lipar ml. (Peter Lipar Jr, 1912–1980), based in Kranj throughout his professional career, who achieved notable recognition for his musical accomplishments. Lipar trained in composition with Slavko Osterc. His output includes approximately 300 works, most notably compositions for youth choirs. Some of these pieces were published in the Grlica magazine.
