Commemorative Plaque to Jakob Aljaž

Šmarna gora
1211 Ljubljana - Šmartno

In 1935, on the initiative of the Glasbena matica Music Society Ljubljana, an elaborately designed relief memorial plaque dedicated to composer and keen mountaineer Jakob Aljaž was attached to the church tower on the top of Šmarna gora hill. The plaque bears a representation of the composer by sculptor Tone Kralj. The engraved verses by poet Oton Zupančič read:

Oh, Triglav priest, you loved the mountain heights,
They were your sacred place, your prayer, your song,
Passion for their beauties you instilled in many hearts,
Now enduring memory of their holy man they enshrine.
